Public Phenomena

2008
152 pages

This book is the result of over ten years of photographic documentation and research on the variety of modifications and inventions people make in public. From roadside memorials to makeshift barriers, people consistently alter shared common spaces to suit their needs, or let both man-made and natural aberrations run wild. The result is a new kind of public space – with creative and inspiring moments that push past the original planned design of cities.

Working Title: Ausgang
Edited by Melinda Fries
Late 2009

Since 1997, Chicago-based artist Melinda Fries has been running the seasonally-updated website ausgang.com. Ausgang (German for "exit") is essentially an artwork in web form that contains the work of numerous contributors (many of whom are not artists or people Melinda has ever met in person). Fries creates themes that are of personal interest (“Living Situations”, “Things In The Road”, “Bus Stories”) and contributors flesh out these topics by submitting stories, images, or projects that are suitable for the web. Over ten years on, ausgang is not only one of the longest-running artist web projects, but has become a rich, vast archive of past and ongoing participation. There have been several ausgang events and physical projects that have supplemented the website over the years. This will be the first presentation of ausgang in book form.
